A Few Tips and Tricks 

•Spend time planning your project carefully and ensure you are ready for the arrival of your concrete. 
•Ensure you are wearing adequate safety gear and have read the health and safety section of this website – if you are working with others you have a duty to ensure they are also familiar with health and safety recommendations. 
•When the pour starts begin at the furthest point and work back. 
•Set times will depend on the grade of mix used and the ambient temperature. Adding extra water will retard the set time and will weaken the mix. 
•To get the best from your concrete ensuring that it is properly cured. Fresh concrete must be protected from loss of moisture as soon as the surface is firm. Plastic sheeting laid over the concrete will prevent moisture loss. Hessian may be used but must be kept damp at all times. There are also chemical curing compounds available, call technical. Curing should be for a minimum of seven days and longer under some conditions. Keep formwork in place whilst curing to protect the edges of the concrete. 
•Avoid laying concrete in very cold weather to prevent frost damage. In the event that it is necessary to lay in below freezing temperatures, cover the concrete to keep warm. 
•Avoid adding water to pre-mixed concrete, it will weaken the mix. 
•If you are laying a large area of concrete, such as for a parking bay or a base for an out-building, you will need to lay the concrete in sections to prevent it from cracking during expansion and contraction. To do this, divide the formwork into bays with control joints between the sections of concrete. A control joint is a gap between sections of concrete fitted with strips of flexible board running across the width of the base.
